Delicious Wedding Favors... Gianna and Josh

One of the things every bride and groom should think of when planning their wedding is what makes 'them' them. When we met Gianna, they were planning a friend's wedding. Then, a sister's wedding. And then it was finally HER wedding. She wanted to honor her mom as well as give her guests something that was truly special as their wedding favor. And from her Italian background, it was the love of cooking. Gianna and her family gave us some of their favorite recipes and we created a cookbook that each guest took home. Kathy at Front Porch Farms created a 'Recipe for Marriage' table for display. A perfect way to have her guests remember their wedding, share their love, and remember her mom. And, here at Designs in Paper, we love getting to create totally unique paper goods that totally represent you - whatever that is! Here's some shots of Gianna and Josh's wedding suite - top two shots taken by Wootton Photography and the remainder taken by Paul Wharton Photgraphy. Enjoy this delicious idea!

Real Wedding - Lisa and Shawn

Today's post is the wonderful wedding of Lisa and Shawn at Historic Cedarwood. We had the pleasure of making some wonderful paper goods that you're gonna love. After our first meeting with Lisa and Shawn, they had gone to visit family and in discussing the invitations, someone had said you should have invitations that your guests will want to frame - and be really memorable. Thus, a wonderfully rich, detailed design. Inside the pocket were not only the details you 'need' for the big day, but also a custom map that included their house, things to do around Nashville (that Lisa and Shawn love) and more. For their wedding day, we created signs that had details about the libations that they had picked - and why. Totally cool.

More Megan & Kevin Real Wedding Details

There were so many awesome details of Megan & Kevin's wedding to share! First, we have to share the so-uber-fabulous guest book idea. Oftentimes, the guest book is the hardest thing to figure out since you may not want a book that will just sit on a shelf... Megan called to ask if we could do a cutout of their logo - and just look at what she made for their guest book! I couldn't wait to get some photos to be able to post them!

The second detail for today's post is the unique way that Megan honored those who were no longer with them. They had notes that had been written to Megan (or about Megan since one was before she was born...) and we took those hand-written letters, transferred them to tissue paper and made a flower that fit into Megan's bouquet. How incredibly special - and I must say the coolest thing we have ever done to help honor loved ones.

We met Megan and her mom, Eileen, over a year before her wedding and just fell in love with them. They wanted to create a very personal wedding experience for their guests - one that when they left for the evening, they knew why the band was selected, what food was Megan's favorites, etc. To tie everything together, Megan wanted a logo that she could use for the paper goods as well as other elements... and oh how we love how it was used! There are soooo many fabulous details of their day that we don't have photos of yet - and lots of them were done by Megan and Eileen. For now, check out their paper goods... and there'll be more later of other awesome details! Thanks to Fete Nashville for the post last week. It's that time again when Pantone (*THE* color people) announce their color of the year for next year... and drum roll, please... It's Tangerine Tango... Be on the lookout for this color to arrive next year in fashion, makeup, home decor, weddings and so much more... Surely it will warm up the spring, show off the heat of summer, and dance into fall where it's been a mainstay of color forever.

Think of it in bird of paradise flowers, sunsets on the beach, fall leaves swirling to the ground, berries on shrubs awaiting the snow...

We had the BEST time doing the paper goods for Claudia and Bill's wedding at Cedarwood this September... Claudia knew she wanted a Nashville vibe for the wedding - so we did an awesome Hatch Show-like invitation and came up with their {c+b} logo that we carried through on everything - their napkins (yes, we do those.), their concert-ticket escort cards, their table numbers, etc. And... Well, we wanted to show some of the other things we do besides just fabulous wedding paper goods. A couple of months ago, Premier Wed called to ask if we could design a 40th surprise invitation for Hope that coordinated with linens and the rest of the evening... think blues, copper and elegant. So, we did a cool design that coordinated with everything, then for the evening - an awesome gobo and all the signage. Veteran's Day..

While typically we have a post about some fabulous paper goods we’ve made, today’s post is about a newspaper photo from my childhood that on a day like today is way more important than any cool paper we’ve done. The photo is a picture of my grandfather on Veteran’s Day with his World War I uniform cap in his right hand across his chest. His head is bowed. It is a part of a Veteran’s Day celebration that as a flutist in the band I was standing at attention (hoping that my knees would not lock) while a prayer was prayed. I could barely see him through the lines until the next day when the local newspaper came out and he was on the front page - head bowed, hand over his heart. That moment. On that day and always, I am proud that I am his granddaughter. He was very active in the local veteran’s group so I grew up with a great respect for the men (in those days) that had fought for our freedom. I had never thought much about the ones that didn’t come back - or came back wounded at that point in my life. Today, I pause to think about those men and women who have fought - and continue to fight - so that I can be free - to choose what I do, where I go, and what I think. Today, I remember the newspaper photo of my grandpa and know that he’s one of my biggest heroes -always. As you see the brave ones that still walk among us, show them the respect and gratitude that they deserve - not just today, but always. They fought for us so we could do just that.

We met Erika early in the year and she knew exactly what style of invitation she was looking for - organic, vintage, rustic and incredibly cool. We had the *best* time doing samples and loved getting feedback from Erika because you could just see/hear her even in her emails. We so loved her engagement photos and couldn't wait to see the photos from the wedding! So, here's the invitation and the oh-so sweet bouquet which I just love (from the ever-incredible Cedarwood team). Tennessee - Tuscany Wedding...

We had the best time creatively with this wedding - vintage maps, travel-theme since the bride was from South Africa and the groom was from Australia. The wedding was intimate, which makes for getting to do so overly-cool paper goods! Check out all of the photos and the story over on the Cedarwood blog. Thanks to the ever-wonderful Kristyn Hogan for the photos (soooo love them). (and we also loved getting to meet Jessica Sloane of Lovebird Style while we were there!)

The program was a passport-style booklet - complete with passport stamps!
(we didn't make the garland for this, but we could have :) )

We took the 1932 Chuckle Map for Tennessee and added all their wedding details and Cedarwood's location on it and used it as the direction card.

We made vintage travel stickers - just like you used to see on suitcases...

Red Roses and Bling...

When Dawn at Premier Wed called and asked if we could do an invitation with black, white, red and lots of bling, we said, sure! She said, I mean A LOT of bling.
Patricia and Art were married at the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville in October with tons of red roses and bling and elegance. Once the custom invitations were created and mailed, it was time to think about the big day... we printed signs, champagne bottle labels, menus, weekend itineraries, tags for all in guest room goodies and good night boxes (with awesome treats from the Hermitage Hotel) as well as cards for the fabulous jeweled frames for each guest with their meal selection. Enjoy a couple of shots from ever-talented Waldorf Photographic Art below... and then head over to Premier Wed to see all of the awesome details of the day... And just in case you're wondering... we used over 1,500 pieces of bling and wonderfully jewelled buckles on the invitations and day of for 80 guests.

Jen and John - Real Wedding

This spring, we had the pleasure of working with Jen and John to create their wedding paper goods - invitations, escort cards, table numbers, programs and day-of signage... and for the big day it was all about the collection of tea cups that they had been collecting. Each guest had a tea cup on their escort card - and then a tea cup at their place setting to be used for their toasts, etc. A very cool thing for guests to remember this special day they were a part of!

We wanted to share a couple of photos of Kristen and Donald's paper goods from their summer wedding - and highlight that we do so much more than invitations! Kristen and Donald wanted a guest book poster that complimented their invitation highlighted Historic Cedarwood. So, we took photos of Cedarwood's barn, house, and truck and converted them to sketches... and viola! A guest book poster! Also, we made little signs for their fabulous favors - homemade applesauce! Since we've been so remiss at posting wonderful events we've done... we thought we'd take time here and there to recap and show off some of them now as we are busily working with 2011 (and 2012!) brides these days... Today's was a special 40th wedding anniversary - with a surprise vow renewal ceremony. The kids got the parents here to Nashville and then surprised them with a wonderful ceremony and evening. (and even the kids were surprised since it was originally planned for Gaylord Opryland during their reconstruction time). For the surprise, we made a special book announcing the evening... and then seating cards, menus, a children's activity book, customized aisle runner and the blinged-out cake topper... For this cold day, we wanted to show off a little paper love that was featured on Completely Unveiled, the Weddings Unveiled blog and Cedarwood. Emily and Jordan had their dream day planned on the beach... and then there was the oil spill. So, Plan B. (as we have Designs in Paper have found out, Plan B is often times the best!). They moved the wedding to Cedarwood, we had their invitations designed, printed and delivered within a week... and the rest is fabulously captured by Ace Photography in these photos and more over on Cedarwood's blog. A brand spankin’ new year. Happy 2011.

It’s impossible to not reflect on the past 525,600 minutes that became 8760 hours that became 365 days. In each of our lives, there were some really wonderfully happy minutes… that you hope time stands still for so you can relish in them. There were some incredibly sad minutes… which time will never completely heal. There were loud, crazy, excited minutes. There were quiet, silent, calm minutes. Through all the minutes, we have changed. They shaped our lives sometimes dramatically, sometimes so subtly that we will never realize that there was a change. For each and every minute, hour, and day, we are thankful.

For 2011, we wish you an over-abundance of the happy, wonderful minutes… the briefest of unhappy minutes… some calm minutes to reflect and some crazy minutes to make you feel alive. And most importantly, we hope that whatever you want 2011 to be, it becomes that. For 2011, I’m not going to have goals – but intentions – strong, deliberate actions that create what I have envisioned 2011 is… minute by minute. And when I look back 525,600 minutes from now, I’m incredibly hopeful they are even better than my vision of them right now.

In a flash it seems, the year has come and almost gone... For the next week, it's that time of year when everything is just crazy - schedules, families, routines (that are totally gone)... and still, there is a moment of total quiet - whether fleeting or lengthy... I pause to think of the gifts that were really, really important in life... and of course, it's not the ones wrapped under a tree. (though I will admit being an only child did offer me the chance for some really cool presents).
Instead, it's the love of my family and friends, a smile of a stranger when you say hello, the twinkle of a child's eye as they hug you, knowing that there is someone in this crazy world that loves you - unconditionally - regardless of anything else that happens. The patchwork of those gifts make us who we are - every day - without having to have a special reason or special packaging. My family is spread out and this year, we're not having the big, loud Christmas breakfast we typically do. Instead, I'll remember those special moments from the past and be thankful for the angels of my family that look over me every minute from above and know that I've been so lucky to have such special gifts in my life. And I look forward to what new gifts 2011 will bring.

Wherever you are, whatever you believe, we hope your holiday season is filled with special moments and memories that you will reflect on for years to come.

As unbelievable at it may seem, tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the US. We've had an incredibly wonderful, crazy time since we last blogged in September... with the most weddings that we've ever done in one month this October and already meeting lots of incredible new 2011 brides. Along with that, we unveiled our 2011 monthly calendar - our 10th anniversary edition. With all of this, I must pause and just breathe. And with the exhale, be so incredibly thankful and grateful.

The list of things to be grateful for is long. Every day, I realize there's something new to be thankful for. Some of them are trivial, almost silly. Some of them are brand spankin' new people that have come in to life, some are people that have been there all along - even when I wasn't so great at recognizing them... or what they mean to me. Tomorrow, I'll go on the crazy dash from family to family - trying to see everyone. As I drive to the craziness, I'm going to think about all how incredibly lucky I am. Lucky to have family that I can see with just a quick trip in the car... a big, loud love that you cannot mistake. Lucky to have the opportunity to do a job that gives me a creative outlet and makes people smile, ooh, and aahhh. Lucky to have friends that love me unconditionally even when I don't remember to call them back, email, or text for weeks and weeks on end. Lucky to have my 'other family' network of people who have been there for me in crazy good, crazy bad, and just plain crazy times... and who I know will be there for me when I need them, want them, and allow me to be me. Lucky to have love... in so many ways, shapes, form and fashion. And just simply Lucky.

Maybe more important than thinking of how thankful I am tomorrow, I will be better day after tomorrow at remembering how lucky I am... and practice more often to show gratitude for the big and little things every day that make me so fortunate.

So, for today - Thank you. Thank you for stopping in to read a little note... whether you're 'real' family, 'other' family, friends, or simply a guest... Hope you take some time to reflect and breathe... and be thankful. Happy Thanksgiving.

Finally, people in Tennessee can enjoy getting up in the morning and opening the door without being hit with 200% humidity and heat... yeah! Along with all of the things that September stands for... football (go Titans), back to school for the kids, and glorious weather... it's also the time of year when some fabulous bridal shows happen... Happy Father's Day! Remember to tell dad or the guy who is just like your dad how much he means to you today... For me, it's all about remembering my dad and my grandpa... the first opposite sex loves of my life. While I didn't get a long time with them, I did get a lifelong learning experiences which thankfully I was paying attention to. My dad taught me how to build a house at 13... he taught me about being self-employed and managing your work. Both my dad and grandpa were incredibly creative with wood... they always gave me a little corner in the shop to do my own creations... I follow in their creative footsteps with paper since I was always a little hesitant with a saw!

Today, I smile knowing that they gave me the greatest love and memories... I thank them for teaching me. and holding my hand. and everything little thing they did to make me who I am today.

So, make sure you tell your dad you love him. and give him a hug. and learn from him. It's something you'll always look back on and remember. no matter how long it has been.

Happy Mother's Day!

Designs in Paper wants to say Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there! Today's the day when you should remember to tell your mom... or your 'other mother' how very special they are to you. Thanks to them (in part at least) we're who we are today. I've often thought about how things change with moms and daughters.

When you're 5, you think your mom's the coolest thing in the entire world and you want to be just like her.
When you're 15, you think that she totally doesn't understand what you could be going through.
When you're 25, you think gee, I'm not going to be like her. I will be different.
When you're 35, you start realizing she was pretty smart. and cool.
When you're 45, you wake up and realize you are turning into your mom. for good or bad.
(I guess we have to wait for a while to find out the rest... I have to get older first!)

For me, every day has a little something that's got my mom written all over it. And that's a wonderfully good thing. While I can't give her the real hug anymore, I can remind everyone who can to show their moms how much they mean to them (not just today, either). For all the other women in my life that are my other moms, thank you - for all you are to me.

Don't forget...
Give someone a hug today and smile at everyone you meet. It'll make someone's day - and it can't hurt yours.

In a world full of beautiful colors, textures, and light sometimes it's soothing to give your eyes a little rest. No matter if your going for a natural, modern, or country look Kraft paper can really make a beautiful statement.

If Kraft paper still isn't your cuppa but you love the natural style, maybe a woodgrain paper will strike your fancy. We are having the best time! We've got stacks and stacks of papers, new samples, more ideas, and just all around staying incredibly busy! We missed doing the Bridal Brunch at Noah Liff Opera Center last week because of the snow - but if you were bummed that you couldn't go... maybe you can now! It's rescheduled for February 28th! Also, we're at a new bridal show called Here Come the Brides! at the Factory in Franklin on Saturday this weekend. Come see all the great new samples, get a cool new product giveaway, and then stop in at Wedding 101 and get acquainted with Amy and Ashley! If you want to go for FREE, we have a few cards that will admit two people (bring the guy, the mom, or the maid of honor with you) just send us an email and we'll meet you!

Lastly, we wanted to post a collage of some incredibly fun times we had last month at Special Events in New Orleans. A Magical Affair was selected to compete in their tabletop competition and we did the paper goods. The setting was a fund-raising gala for the ASPCA called the Fur Ball. You can see from the collage it wasn't your ordinary pet event... from a working water fountain in the fire hydrant, floral embellished toys, dog bones for menu cards, chairs with tails and masks, dog collars/tags for placecards... and of course, a pet friendly event, so water bowls and custom mats for them. (and look at that incredibly fab logo we made!)

While A Magical Affair didn't win the competition, it definitely won on popular vote (and photo-taking)! Graceful Tables and Reveal Event Style were also part of the team... thanks for allowing us to be a part of it, Courtney! We loved it!

It's January and that means it's Bridal Show Season! We've started the year off with the Enchanted Brides show last week and today, Weddings the Bridal Show. We love getting to meet everyone - give out cool giveaways and even though we've got some tired feet tonight, we're ready to start on new samples!

Wanted to post a few photos of our display from the Enchanted Brides Show --- it was an incredibly cold and snowy night for Nashville and we're glad to have talked to you if you were there!

Wow, oh wow. We are certainly not sure how the last 6 weeks have managed to fly by --- did someone put time in overdrive? We've had a fabulous few weeks that were filled with weddings, invitations, save the dates, holiday cards, tea parties, and other incredibly fun projects! We're already working on our 2010 bridal show giveaways (which are cool), our displays, and other great products and excited about 2010 and all it will bring.

So, for now, we want to say THANK YOU. For reading the blog, for being our families, customers, friends, vendors, and probably all of the above. The best part of it all is creating relationships and keeping those relationships long after the paper has been tossed, scrapbooked, put in a memory box, or whatever. We hope your holidays have and continue to be wonderful... and may 2010 with all its new sparkle bring you a twinkle in your eye and a smile on your face.

New 2010 Calendar Styles...

So, we just had to put some shots up of our new 4x6 jewel case calendars... they are fab! (we are probably biased though!) We wanted to have a larger format calendar than our minis and business card versions that still didn't require a frame, etc. so, here we are! It's actuall a 6x4 calendar if you want to get really technical since it's a landscape version. We'll have them online in our store in the next few days - they are a steal at only $10 before the shipping, tax (if applicable) etc. and it's only 51 days until 2010 starts if you can even believe that. These calendars would make a great present for guys as well as gals since they are not frilly... and pink... they would mail really easy to your far-away friends (we'll even do that for you if you like!) and everyone at our shows have loved them!

Seriously, can it be November now? We'd like to report an instance of time moving at warp speed, please. Just like everyone else in the US, I woke up not sure what time it was today... but the sun was shining brillantly - a welcome sight in Nashville lately. I have been waiting for a glorious blue sky to take a few photos of a maple in the front yard before I have to pick up all of the leaves... so off I go. Except... on the way, I get sidetracked by the dew on some other plants and flowers. So, I thought while I was working on a new post, I'd share what Nature's idea of bling is. (and I'm pretty sure it rocks more than a lot of other bling does.) It's amazing how it just hangs on to the very edge of these plants... all perfectly spaced and shining so brillantly.

Happy November! Soon there will be some new calendar designs that we've just finished in a brand new style!

This past weekend, Designs in Paper was present at the Enchanted Brides Show at Cheekwood... In fact, we were in a fabulous spot right in front of the fashion show, so we enjoyed the entire event! If you haven't been to Wedding 101 yet, you probably haven't seen our cool fabric ideas... so we thought we'd do a little view of them on this post -they're in the bottom right hand photo.
